Hyderabad: Old city on Sunday reverberated with drum beats and Jai Mata di slogans as people celebrated the annual Bonalu festivities at different Mahankali temples.All roads leading to temples in the city were decked up with lights and illumination.

Since the crack of dawn, devotees started turning up in large numbers to offer ‘bonam’ to Mother Goddess.Women carrying traditional ‘bonam’ offerings and potharajus in small processions from surrounding areas converged to the temples that were aesthetically decorated for the occasion.

Cracking the whips and dancing to the resounding drum beats, potharajus lead the processions.Dressed in the traditional attires, men and women, stood in serpentine queues at different temples to offer prayers.

Braving the intermittent rains, people continued to visit the temples till late in the afternoon.The celebrations at the historic Akkanna Madanna Mahankali and Lal Darwaza temples hit a crescendo with a host of celebrities, politicians and others offering prayers.While Endowments Minister Indra Karan Reddy and Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy presented the “Pattu Vasthralu” at the Simhavahini Mahankali temple in Lal Darwaza while Animal Husbandry Minister, T Srinivas Yadav offered the same at Akkanna Madanna Mahankali temple.
